There’s no such a thing as a unique idea. I bet someone somewhere already had or has quite a similar idea for a startup. Or even if they don’t have such an idea yet, they will have it until you launch your product.

I’m sick of people who think that their ideas are so great that everyone around them would steal them if they heard them. People who give you the NDA to sign, before even telling you what the business idea is about, are silly.

Let’s say you just came to me and said: Karol, I have a brilliant idea. I want you to tell me what you think, but first we need to sign this NDA. You know what my answer is? Here’s the door.

You call me a thief and you still want me to help you? C’mon!

I (just like a ton of other people, including VCs, bloggers, entrepreneurs) don’t have the time (and don’t even want to) to build a business based on your idea. No, we want you to build this business. That’s your idea. If you ask us for some advice – we’re here to help, not to steal.

Look at me… I run PayLane and Squidility, I also write articles here, as well as on other blogs and media sites. Besides that I have family, friends, hobby etc. I have a life. Your idea is not even half as important, as my life. So… sorry, but no. I’m not going to steal your idea; I’m not going to build my own business based on your idea and no… (shit, no!) I’m not going to sign your NDA just because you came to me to describe what your idea is about.

More than that… I would say that sharing your ideas with others is even more important than you think. Yes, SHARING YOUR IDEAS (even ideas, that you think are so great, so innovative, that you want to build a business based on them).

You may hear feedback and/or constructive criticism

The number one reason why it’s worth to share your ideas with others. Because of feedback. Because of constructive criticism.

Yeah, I’m sure that there are lots of aspects that you didn’t think about. Other people can help you reduce risk of failure and help you to build a better product by pointing out some problems you may have or simply by asking proper questions.

More than that – they may tell you what they think. What’s good and what’s bad in your product/startup/idea. What they like and what they don’t. How and would they use this product. When? For what?

You may think that you know everything. About your idea, your product, competitors, target group, industry… but trust me, there’s no better source of knowledge than your users.

You may find someone you need

If you are able to “sell” your idea to others – you may not only learn a lot, but also “buy” someone you’re looking for.

If your idea is as brilliant, as you think – a lot of great people might want to be a part of it. Let’s say you need a co-founder, a business partner, an investor or simply an employee. By sharing your idea with others – you may interest others by it.

You can get press for your startup

By sharing your idea with others – you may interest media by it. You may interest journalists, bloggers or influencers.

You should start to promote your startup as soon as possible. And there’s no sooner time than on a stage of an idea. If your idea is as great, as you think – you may get free press for your startup even without having a product yet.

Remember… getting major media coverage for your business is hard. As soon as you can start building relationships with journalists – the bigger the chances are that they are going to write about you later.
