What Would Michael Sliwinski Do With 1 Billion Dollars?

We all have some sort of answer to the question of what we would do if someone invested in us/gave us some amount of money. Let say a million or 5 millions dollars. But what would you do if someone gave you $1B?

We all have some sort of answer to the question of what we would do if someone invested in us/gave us some amount of money. Let say a million or 5 millions dollars. But what would you do if someone gave you $1B?

Recently I asked Michael Sliwinski (founder of Nozbe & Remag, editor of the Productive! Magazine, blogger sliwinski.com) about this. This is what he answered…

The problem with a Billion dollars is the fact that it’s a lot of money :-) And what I mean by that is this: it usually takes time to get used to big money. That’s why many lottery winners end up poorer than before they won. In my career I’ve been gradually earning more money and when you do that, you get used to these new “levels” of money at your disposal and you start making smarter buying decisions, investing in your company, your team, other companies… and the more you earn the better you become at using this money.

Now on to your question – if suddenly I had 1 Billion dollars, what would I do?

I guess I’d first divide this sum into smaller chunks, like 100M or 10M or even 1M dollar chunks… and think what to do with each of them:

  1. I’d invest part of the money into my company to grow it faster
  2. I’d buy more Apple stock :-) I might even buy stock of some other companies I believe in
  3. I’d set up and investment fund to invest in some of my friends’ companies or startups
  4. I’d set up a charity fund to start not only helping existing charities but also maybe start some other charitable projects
  5. And finally I’d probably buy some real estate – there’s always some great real estate around which I’d buy if I had the funds, as a safe investment for the future.

With all of the investments I’d focus on long term growth and profitability, to be able to slowly in the long run multiply this 1Billion fund.

Yes, I think that’s what I would do.
